Pregnancy is an incredible journey, but it can also bring physical changes that leave you feeling a little less comfortable than usual.
As your baby grows, your body adapts in remarkable ways. Your posture changes, your centre of gravity shifts, and the ligaments supporting your pelvis begin to soften in preparation for birth. Whilst these changes are completely normal, they can sometimes contribute to aches, pains and stiffness.
Many women tell us they expected some discomfort during pregnancy, but they didn’t expect how much everyday activities could change.
Simple things like:
- Getting comfortable in bed
- Walking for longer periods
- Sitting at a desk
- Turning over during the night
- Picking up older children
- Standing for extended periods
can start to feel more challenging as pregnancy progresses.
Why Can Pregnancy Cause Back and Pelvic Pain?
Pregnancy places new demands on the body.
As your bump grows, the muscles, joints and ligaments of the spine and pelvis work differently to accommodate these changes. Hormonal changes can also affect how joints move and how the body responds to physical stress.
It’s common for women to experience:
- Lower back pain
- Pelvic girdle pain
- Hip discomfort
- Mid-back or rib discomfort
- Neck and shoulder tension
- General stiffness and muscular aches
For some women these symptoms are mild, while for others they can have a greater impact on daily activities.
How Can Chiropractic Care Support You?
Chiropractic care during pregnancy focuses on supporting the musculoskeletal system and helping women manage aches and pains associated with the physical changes of pregnancy.
Your comfort is always a priority. We use specialist pregnancy pillows and adapt our techniques and positioning throughout pregnancy to ensure appointments are as comfortable as possible. Care is tailored to your individual needs and stage of pregnancy.
Alongside treatment, we may also discuss posture, movement, exercise and simple self-care strategies that can help you stay active and comfortable as your body changes.
Every pregnancy is unique, and any care provided is adapted to you and your circumstances.
A Collaborative Approach
Pregnancy care works best when healthcare professionals work together.
Chiropractors are one part of a wider support network that may include your midwife, GP, obstetric team, physiotherapist and other healthcare professionals. If you choose to seek chiropractic care during pregnancy, it should complement the advice and care you already receive.
Our role is to listen to your concerns, assess any musculoskeletal discomfort you may be experiencing, and discuss whether chiropractic care is an appropriate option for you.
Additional Training in Pregnancy and Family Care

She has a particular interest in supporting families through these important stages of life and takes a gentle, individualised approach to care.
Looking After Yourself Matters Too
The reality is that you are already doing an amazing job.
Many women move through pregnancy without needing additional support. Others find that talking to a healthcare professional about pregnancy-related aches and pains helps them stay comfortable and confident as their body changes.
Whatever support you choose, the most important thing is that you feel informed, supported and able to enjoy this unique stage of life as comfortably as possible.
