One of my favourite times of year is autumn — the beautiful colours from the trees, leaves gently falling, hot drinks galore, and that extra hour when the clocks change.
But while the season feels refreshing and cosy, it does come with a few downsides that sometimes lead to visits to our clinic — the biggest one being an increased risk of falls. Cooler weather, wet leaves, and darker evenings can all make it easier to lose your footing.
So here are a few simple tips to keep you safe, strong, and healthy this autumn.
- Watch Out for Slippery Leaves and Wet Surfaces
Those beautiful leaves can become as slick as ice when wet. Combine that with shorter daylight hours and early frost, and the risk of a fall increases.
Try This:
- Watch your step and walk more slowly outdoors.
- Clear pathways of leaves and debris.
- Wear shoes with firm, non-slip soles.
Even a minor fall can strain your spine, hips, or joints — so prevention is your best defence!
- Keep Your Home Fall-Proof
Many falls happen inside the home — especially during autumn when we start spending more time indoors.
Easy ways to reduce your risk:
- Clear clutter from the floors and hallways.
- Fix or remove loose rugs.
- Install handrails where needed.
- Brighten lighting in dim areas.
- Reorganise storage to avoid overreaching.
- Keep your glasses clean for better visibility.
Taking these steps can make your home safer and your movements more confident.
- Warm Up Before Autumn Activities
Whether you’re raking leaves, gardening, or decorating, colder weather can make your muscles tighten more quickly.
Try This:
Do a few minutes of light stretching before heading outside — focus on your shoulders, legs, and lower back to prevent strains and stiffness.
- Strengthen Your Balance and Core
Your balance begins with a strong core and good posture.
Simple balance exercises:
- Stand on one leg for 30 seconds.
- Practice gentle yoga or Tai Chi.
- Engage your core while sitting or standing.
- Stay Active and Listen to Your Body
Shorter days can make it tempting to slow down, but consistent movement keeps your joints flexible and your spine strong.
